Democracy can be a good system when it is practised within a framework of patriotic leadership and enlighten citizenry. The enlightened people of Scotland have ascertained this conceptuality by putting selfish politicians to shame and further strengthening their long and historic Union. This is a country, not part of a country, which together with England, Wales and Northern Ireland agreed over three hundred years to live as a United Kingdom, despite differences in culture, ethnicity, language and religion.
The same aspiration that ignited civil war in my country, Nigeria after just six years of independence, is handled maturely with equal dignity to the ‘YES’ and the ‘Nos,’ and the leaders of the ‘YES’ have submitted willingly and faithfully with all sense of unity and respect to the voice of the people. Until today, Nigeria has not yet recovered from the devastation of Biafra civil war; an unfortunate war that violently and slowly departed the country off the path of growth both independence patriots and colonial masters placed it on.
Unfortunately, we still see in today's modern world, Catalonians, a region, aspiring for a break from legendary Spain, and most ridiculous of it all, they eagerly look forward to Scottish independence as a catalyst to their so-called freedom. Similar kind of yearnings, because it was and still is not demonstrated with thoughtfulness, has thrown the Middle East and Arab world into a state of confusion with a consequential aftermath of revolution and counter-revolution that they were never prepared for. I am not sure if the newest nation of South Sudan has discovered from its illusion after reversing and breaking a part, a once great nation of Africa.
How microscopic can we continue to subdivide ourselves to find that dreamed comfort? How irrational can we continue to think to realise the fortitude of indivisibility? It is rather ill-fated, the democracy that we all thought it was the liberator of the human race, is being misused by the selfish elite to exploit the ignorance of often unmindful and ungrateful citizens. We must learn to appreciate God’s blessings upon us at any time; otherwise, we will continue to languish in a regrettable statement of ‘Had we known...’ God forbids.
